Abbey Defeated Again

Wed 16th Nov 2011

After a bright start to Mac Rory Cup 2011, Abbey CBS now find themselves dependent on results going their way in the next round of games if they are to secure automatic qualification into the Mac Rory Cup quarter-finals.

After Saturday's defeat to Maghera, Abbey were looking to bounce back with a victory in their final group clash against St. Marys CBS Belfast. 12 minutes of the first half passed before the first score was registered, coming for the Belfast side. Callum Cumiskey replied for Abbey with a fine score from the dead ball. After 20 minutes, the scores were level at 3 points apiece with Cumiskey racking up all of Abbey's tally. At the 22 minute mark, a defensive mix up allowed the St. Marys half-forward Ciaran Vernon in to finish low past goalkeeper Hanna for a goal for the Belfast school. St. Marys followed this up with a score almost instantly to take a 4-point lead. However, two more scores from Cumiskey, taking him to 5 for the half, ensured that Abbey would only trail by 2 points at the interval.

Over 28 second-half minutes passed without Abbey registering a single point on the scoreboard, with St.Marys scoring 4 points in that period. It wasn't until a Cumiskey free, 2 minutes from the end, with his side trailing by 6, when Abbey got their first score of the half. This was soon cancelled out by a score at the other end, and although Donagh McAleenan then reduced the deficit to 5 points with a great solo effort, the Belfast men ran out 5 point winners over an Abbey side looking a shadow of the team which opened the campaign with 2 great victories over Omagh and St. Colmans. Final score 1-08 to 0-6
