Maghera end Abbey's Run

Wed 16th Nov 2011

On a cold Saturday morning at Derrytresk, Maghera exploded out of the blocks and took an early lead through a Gerald Bradley free-kick. Bradley then doubled his side's advantage with another set piece. After Maghera got their first score from play to take a 3-point lead, Callum Cumiskey replied for the Newry side to get them off the mark. Maghera were clinical in attack with the majority of their chances resulting in scores. Abbey however, were very wasteful and missed a series of goal chances when it seemed easier to score. Maghera took a 5 point lead into the interval with Bradley racking up 3 of these and Stephen O'Hara on the mark with 2 for the Derry men.

After the break, Maghera's midfield began to really assert themselves in the game and won the lion's share of kickouts, whether the ball was caught clean or on the break. They raced into a 7 point lead at the midway point, and just when a comfortable victory looked odds on for the Derry side, Abbey fought back with scores from Cumiskey and the substitue Mc Aleenan. In an improved second half performance, Abbey rallied, but in the end Maghera prevailed by a margin of 4 points. Final score 0-17 to 0-13
