Cross and Passion College got their 2011 BT Mageean Cup campaign off to a winning start with a hard fought win against local rivals St Killian's Garron Tower in Glenariffe, on a 5-9 to 2-7 scoreline. The result of the game was in the balance right up until the last 10 minutes, when CPC scored a couple of late goals through Saul McCaughan and new boy Conleth McNeill (who was playing against his old school) to pull away.
The first half was a very tight affair, St Killians posing a goal threat with their full forward Delargy a dominat figure in the game. However with Patrick Blaney, Niall McFadden and Conall Brown battling hard they kept Cross and Passion in the game and scores from Saul McCaughan, Conor McCurdy and Conor Christie had Cross and Passion ahead by 3 points at half time.
St Killians came out strong at the start of the second half and soon equalised, through the hard running of centre forward Eamon Kearns. This kickstarted the Ballycastle lads into life as full back Paul "Bricky" McErlain started to win his battles with Delargy and with Blaney, Brown and Eoghan Campbell supplying plenty of ball to their forward line, the scores soon came as Conleth McNeill and Conor Christie found their range to help Cross and Passion College push on and record an opening day win.
Both teams will be glad of the workout but Cross & Passion will know that they have a serious amount of hard work and improving to do over the coming weeks if they are to give reigning champions St Pats Maghera or hot favourites St Mary's Belfast a run for their money in the competition.
