Casement Cup

Tue 29th Sep 2009

Loreto 2-6 Garron Tower 6-9

It was a tough start for the Senior Hurlers in their opening match of the Casement Cup, up against a strong Garron Tower who had only recently dropped out of the Magean Cup, Ulster Colleges top Hurling Competition.  The match took place with challenging wet and windy conditions and with Loreto playing into the wind in the first half, scores were difficult to come by.

The Loreto squad was missing the influential Kevin McCloskey and a few Year 11s and 12s were given a taste of Senior Hurling.  With some great defensive and team play Loreto made life difficult for the opposition during the first 20 minutes but with the experience of playing top flight hurling, Garron Tower took the upper hand building up a formidable lead.

Making his debut appearance at Senior level, Y11 student John McLister capped off a fine performance at wing three-quarters with two points.  Another Y11 student Kieran Kelly took on the responsibility of goalkeeper, a position he has never played and nonetheless showed good potential.  Peter McKeague gave a fine performance at midfield, providing some excellent balls to the forwards.

James McLister led the attack at full-forward, scoring a goal and three points while Sean Owens gave a battling display at centre three-quarters, scoring a good goal just before half-time.  Credit must go to the Loreto lads for holding their resolve and battling to the final whistle.
