BT Brock Cup final : St Patrick’s Maghera v St Patrick’s Dungannon
These players from the schools of St Patrick’s in Maghera and Dungannon are meeting in a BT Ulster Colleges’ final for the fourth time.
In each of the previous meetings, Maghera have triumphed but last February’s Corn na nÓg final was a see-saw event with Dungannon’s 14 men beseiging Maghera’s defence for the full of the second half but coming up a single point short on a 2-9 to 3-7 scoreline.
Previous to that there was a goal-fest in the D’Alton final, with Maghera’s 4-18 just enough to edge out Dungannon’s 7-4.
Maghera have been impressive in their run to the final, although their character was tested in the semi-final against Omagh CBS. They weathered the storm though and came through on a 0-17 to 1-7 scoreline.
Up front the accuracy of Gerald Bradley, Conor Convery and Peter Cassidy has been a huge factor, with the latter hoping to put a smile back on his the face of his dad, Derry senior manager Damien Cassidy.
Dungannon got it a lot tighter in their semi final. Abbey CBS were 4 points ahead with 10 minutess to go, but a goal against the run of play brought the Academy back into the game and Deasun Quinn landed a difficult 40 metre free in the last minute to win the match.
However injuries have hit hard in the Dungannon camp with Michael Lynn breaking his thumb in a club game and then defender Brian Gavin broke his ankle also in a club game on Sunday past.
Those absentees – and Maghera’s form coming into the final – suggest that the Derry side will add yet another medal to their collection.
But Colleges’ football over the years has been hard to call and it might just be the Academy’s turn to get the rub of the green in a final.
