St Patrick’s Academy 3-11 St Mary’s Belfast 1-4
Tuesday 20th October in Glenavy
St Patrick’s Academy continued their unbeaten streak in Group B of the Rannafast Cup with a comprehensive win over St Mary’s Belfast. A fairly strong breeze favoured the Belfast team in the first half but some very wayward shooting could have them in a strong position by the end of the first half. However it was some excellent kicking into the breeze by Ryan Devlin who scored from frees in the 2nd and 6th minutes and then an excellent ’45 in the 10th minute with a single point reply from St Mary’s in the 5th minute had Dungannon 0-3 to 0-1 up. A point by full forward Aidan McGarrity pushed St Patrick’s Academy further ahead but a great Belfast move and some absent marking in the Dungannon defence allowed Belfast to level the contest with a well taken goal in the 14th minute. A minute later, Belfast should have had another goal but for a fine save from Dungannon goalkeeper Daire Martin. Dungannon then hit three points without reply from McGarrity (20th), John Loughran (21st ) and Richard Kelly (22nd) to put them in command again. St Mary’s replied with their final point of the half in the 28th minute and Devlin hit the last score of the half for St Patrick’s Academy in the 29th minute to leave the half time score St Patrick’s Academy 0-8 St Mary’s, Belfast 1-2.
At the start of the second half the sides traded scores with Kevin O’Gorman scoring for Dungannon. A well taken goal from Kelly put Dungannon in a comfortable 1-9 to 1-3 lead in the 10th minute of the half. A further point from Devlin and another goal from Sean Molloy left the result of the contest a formality for Dungannon. Harry Loughran added a further point for Dungannon and then in the move of the match, a powerful run out of defence by Colm Corrigan led to him playing a one-two with Devlin and then giving a perfect pass to Loughran who with great pace burst through the Belfast defence and hit a great shot to the St Mary’s net to leave the score 3-10 to 1-3. St Mary’s hit the final point of the match in the 24th minute to leave the final score St Patrick’s Academy 3-11 St Mary’s, Belfast 1-4
