Good start for Red High

St. Patrick’s Downpatrick got their MacLarnon campaign of to a great start with a comprehensive win over St. Malachys Belfast.

St. Malachys got off to a bad start with an own goal and the Red High lads took full advantage of this and the strong breeze and it wasn’t long before David Gilmore had the ball over the bar. With great fielding from Owen Clarke and Paul Kelly in midfield, it wasn’t long before the ball was in the back of the net again, assisted by the boot of Ryan Slavin.

St. Malachys heads were down but yet they still managed to create a few chances. Although they never really posed a threat to the Red High defence.

Scoring continued for the Red High with goals from Michael Monan and Paul Kelly and some well executed moves from the middle third sector resulted in points from Danny Morgan (3), Ryan Slavin (2) and Paul Kelly(1). This left Red High with a comfortable lead at half time of 4:07 to no score.

After a few changes at the half, the Belfast side got their scoring off to a start with a point although Red High replied with four of their own. After Morgan missed a penalty, St. Malachys were awarded one of their own which was smoothly slotted to the bottom left corner. Strong defensive displays from Conor Corrigan, Isaac McCauley and Danny Toner ensured this was the last of their scores.

An all round team performance left Red High with a 4:14 to 1:01 victory.
