St. Patrick’s Captains Honoured
Ulster Colleges BT Winning Captains Awards Dinner
Friday night past saw the new sponsorship deal between BT and Ulster Colleges bring 30 different school captains to the splendid setting of the Lagan Valley Island Conference Centre in Lisburn for an Awards dinner. Invited to the event, courtesy of BT, were the winning captains from all of last years Colleges competitions along with their parents and teacher/coaches – all this courtesy of BT as the company expands it’s very generous sponsorship to cover all Ulster Colleges competitions. A tremendous 3 course banquet preceded the presentation of cups to the captains along with a Tyrone Crystal memento and full colour poster commemorating their achievements as successful captains of their school teams. Guests of honour on the night were Director General of the GAA, Mr Padraic Duffy, and Antrim GAA captain, Mr. Paddy Cunningham. MC for the event was Jerome Quinn. Mr Peter Morris of BT welcomed and congratulated all the successful captains – their schools, their teachers and their parents. Mr. Morris also encouraged all the boys to continue their development in their sport and pledged BT’s continued support for schools GAA over the next few years.
St. Patrick’s Maghera were represented at this prestigious event by last school year’s successful captains, Stephen O’Hara from the Watty Graham’s, Glen GAA club who was captain of the College Corn na n-Óg(U14.5 A football) team. Stephen was adding to the D’Alton Cup and Year 8 Martin O’Farrell Cup winners medals he had earned as a Year 9 and Year 8 pupil in the College. Stephen’s clubmate Conor Convery also attended the event as captain of the College’s successful D’Alton Cup(U13.5A football) captain. This was Conor’s second D’Alton winners medal having played as a Year 8 pupil when St. Patrick’s defeated their namesakes from Dungannon and progressing to captain the team last year to victory over St. Mary’s Magherafelt. Conor also won a Corn na n-Óg medal last year. The boys were accompanied on the night by their parents and their coaches, Mr. Colum Lavery, Mr. John Henry and Mr. Paul Hughes.
