DANSKE BANK MacRory Cup
Cavan & Lurgan Join Danske Bank MacRory Cup
June 12, 2013
Ulster Colleges’ Council yesterday announced details of next season’s Danske Bank MacRory Cup.
Two more schools have joined the race – St Patrick’s Cavan and MacLarnon Cup champions St Michael’s Lurgan – meaning that there are now 12 teams in contention in the 92nd year of the competition.
Neither of the schools are newcomers to this level of competition with both competing three seasons ago.
St Michael’s coach David Wilson feels that his team can improve at MacRory level.
“We have moved up to MacRory in the past after winning the MacLarnon and those squads have improved significantly playing against better teams week after week. “We are looking at whatSt Paul’s Bessbrook, the 2012 MacLarnon champions, have achieved over the past season. They looked at challenging their students at a higher level and those boys rose to the challenge.
“Hopefully we also can take a step forward and establish ourselves at that level.”
St Patrick’s Cavan are approaching the competition on the back of under-age success after collecting the Danske Bank Rannafast Cup last season.
That team’s coach Fr Kevin Fay sees it as a logical step for the school.
“It was a great boost to win the Rannafast Cup and we have been doing as well as any other school in the A competitions down the school.
“There is also increased optimism in Cavan football at all levels and we would like to believe that we will hold our own this year.”
The increase to 12 schools means that only two teams from each group will qualify automatically for the MacRory Cup quarter-final draw.
Group finishing positions will trigger 4 play-offs – A3 v B6, A4 v B5, A5 v B4 and A6 v B3.
A decision has also been taken not to play these play-off games before Christmas. Instead they will take place on the first weekend of February 2014 with the winners progressing to quarter-finals the following week.
St Patrick’s Cavan have been drawn in the same group as Hogan champions St Patrick’s Maghera, while St Colman’s, St Michael’s Enniskillen, Abbey CBS and St Patrick’sArmaghmake up group A.
St Michael’s Lurgan have Armagh neighbours and 2013 MacRory finalists St Paul’s Bessbrook for company in Group B, along with the two Tyrone schools (omagh CBS and St Patrick’s Academy), St Macartan’s and St Mary’s Magherafelt.
There are 14 teams in the Danske Bank Rannafast Cup that begins in the first week of the new term. These include Patrician High Carrickmacross, St Pius X and the Donegal combination team Coláistí Inis Eoghain.
Significantly, in view of the result from Casement Park on Sunday, no Antrim school is included at Grade A level of competition save St Mary’s Belfast in the Danske Bank Corn na nÓg – an under 14 competition.
