DANSKE BANK Thompson Cup
CPC take Thompson Cup from Blitz
June 6, 2013
Cross and Passion Ballycastle have collected the Danske Bank Brian Thompson Cup for Year 8 hurling after an evenly-contested blitz involving 12 schools yesterday in Belfast.
After the group stages, Cross and Passion met and defeated holders St Patrick’s Maghera in the first semi-final while St Mary’s Belfast needed a goal in added time to edge out St Killian’s 3-3 to 2-5.
In the final an early goal from Paul Boyle kept Ballycastle ahead for the rest of the match as the teams traded scores.
Despite the best efforts of Cormac McGettigan, David Whinnery and Aaron Bradley, a goal from Caolan Crossan and 5 points from Eoin McMenamin, St Mary’s came up a point short, 2-3 to 1-5, with the second ‘Castle goal coming early in the second half from Ronan McAllister.
In the Shield final, St Louis Ballymena, who had drawn with Ballycastle in the group stages, defeated Our Lady’s & St Patrick’s Knock 3-1 to 0-3 with goals from Rian McCann (2) and Rory Mullan.
In the O’Mahony Cup final, La Salle had a single point to spare over St Patrick’s Downpatrick, 1-5 to 2-1, while in the Plate final, St Mary’s Magherafelt took the spoils on a 2-3 to 0-2 scoreline against Abbey CBS Newry.
