Danske Bank O’Farrell Cup Final
St Patrick’s Maghera: 3-7 Abbey CBS: 2-1
St Patrick’s Maghera completed their Ulster Colleges’ programme by retaining the Danske Bank O’Farrell Cup with an unbeaten run through the blitz on Saturday at St Mary’s CBGS.
Maghera edged out Abbey CBS by a single point in the opening game but both teams then breezed through the rest of the competition to meet in the final.
Maghera defeated the hosts St Mary’s by 5-5 to 0-1 in their semi-final with 4 goals from Alex Doherty, while Abbey had a goal to spare over St Patrick’s Dungannon in their side of the draw, 2-3 to 1-3.
Doherty continued his scoring form in the decider by opening Maghera’s account with 1-3. However Paul Martin hit back with 1-1 and four points separated the teams at the break 1-5 to 1-1.
Early in the second half, a goal from Dara Gough closed the gap to 2 points but Caolán Tohill and Eunan Mulholland each fired in 1-1 to seal victory for Maghera.
Players to catch the eye were goalie Caolan Convery, defenders Lee Tsang and Conleth McShane, Daithí McLaughlin and Alex Doherty for Maghera, while Fearghal Vallely, Callum O’Hare, Paul Martin, Dara Gough and Eoin Carr showed well for Abbey.
