Year 8 camogie success for CPC and St Catherine’s

Year 8 camogie finals

There was mixed news for the two north Antrim schools in yesterday’s Ulster Colleges’ Year 8 finals.  Cross & Passion Ballycastle claimed the 15-a-side crown, while St Killian’s Garron Tower came up a point short in the 12-a-side decider.

Róisín McCormick dominated the first match from centre-half back for Cross and Passion with good support from Maeve Kelly at midfield.

CPC had the wind advantage in the first half and they made it count with Anna Connolly scoring a 6th minute goal.  She was to add two points before the break while a long free from McCormick was finished to the net by Charley McCarry and Ballycastle led by 2-2 to 0-0.

Their defence was superb during the second half under intense pressure from holders St Mary’s, conceding only a Maria Carey goal 10 minutes from time.  However a good team move up the field in the last 5 minutes resulted in a point for Maeve Kelly finishing the scoring at 2-3 to 1-0.

Good starts to both halves were the key to St Catherine’s Armagh’s 6-1 to 5-3 victory over St Killian’s in the 12-a-side final.

Despite playing against the breeze St Catherine’s took the lead with early goals from Hannah Devlin and Catherine Muldoon.  Ellen Leech settled St Killian’s with a point and, although Catherine Muldoon hit back with a goal, Méabh Allen with a hat-trick sent St Killian’s in with an interval lead of 3-1 to 3-0.

St Catherine’s now had the breeze and three quick goals on the re-start from Emer Rooney, Emma Muldoon and Amy Morton looked to have killed the game.

However St Killian’s hit back with 2 goals from Ellen Leech and 2 points from Méabh Allen.  A point from the excellent Catherine Muldoon in the middle of that however proved invaluable as it was the difference between the teams at the final whistle.
