Cavan in first Colleges' final for 6 seasons

St Patrick’s Cavan reached their first Ulster Colleges’ final in 6 seasons with a power-packed second half against St Patrick’s Maghera in the BT Dalton Cup semi-final in Derrytresk yesterday.

The teams were tied, Maghera 1-5 to Cavan’s 0-8, at the break, with Christopher Dempsey finding the net for Maghera and Ryan Connolly and Ronan O’Reilly driving the Cavan response.

However in the second half, the Breffni boys hit a five minute purple patch in which they recorded an impressive 2-4 and to see the game swing in their favour.

Ronan O’Reilly and Ben Conhey bagged the goals that opened the gap and, despite Maghera fighting back with a goal from Michael Mullan, Pearse Smith clinched a 3-14 to 2-10 victory with Cavan’s third goal.

Cavan will now face Abbey CBS in the final on Thursday 2pm in Pearse Óg grounds in Armagh.

St Patrick’s Cavan : Ronan O’Reilly 1-4, Pearse Smith 1-2, Ben Conhey 1-1, Ryan Connolly 0-4, Matthew McKenna 0-2, Daragh Gannon 0-1.

St Patrick’s Maghera : Michael Mullan 1-3, Christopher Dempsey 1-2, Michael McCloskey 0-2, Ciaran Steele 0-2, Paul McNeill 0-1.
