St Colman’s Newry 1-15 Abbey CBS 1-6
The turning point in the Newry MacRory Cup derby in Pairc Esler on Saturday morning came in the 15th minute, when Ross McGarry earned and scored a penalty for St Colman’s.
That score opened the gap for the College boys and they powered into an interval lead of 1-8 to 0-3 with the Abbey only managing a point from Patrick Quinn in the second quarter.
Although Niall Cunningham pointed two frees on the re-start, Chris Clarke (2) and Colin Stevenson kept St Colman’s ticking over and even a scrambled goal from Oisin Lynch did not derail them.
Clarke and Stevenson responded to ensure that St Colman’s pick up their first league points of the competition.
St Colman’s : Ross McGarry 1-2, Colin Stevenson 0-5, Chris Clarke 0-5, Conor Gough 0-1, Paul Lively 0-1, Paul Hillen 0-1.
Abbey : Oisin Lynch 1-0, Niall Cunningham 0-3, Fearghal McAvoy 0-1, Niall McCartan 0-1, Patrick Quinn 0-1.
