St Mary’s Magherafelt came from behind at the break to record their second victory in the BT MacRory Cup today in Killeshil.
Although Monaghan played with the aid of the breeze in the first half, there was little between the teams until the 20th minute when full-forward Daniel McKenna took advantage of a stray punch by the Magherafelt goalkeeper to slot home from close range.
The Sem led by 1-4 to 0-5 at the break, but points in quick succession from Conor Kearns, David McGuckin and Fergal Duffin put Magherafelt ahead and they never looked back.
In the closing stages McKenna pulled a couple of scores back for Monaghan to leave a dangerous two points margin in the game – but Magherafelt managed to close them out and join their south Derry neighbours St Patrick’s Maghera at the top of Group B with 4 points each from 2 starts.
In Group A, Omagh CBS have also 4 points from 2 starts, but, because of hurling commitments, St Patrick’s Armagh and St Mary’s Belfast still have to start their campaigns.
They both should be in action before November 7th when the next full round of fixtures is scheduled.
St Mary’s : Conor Kearns 0-5, David McGuckin 0-2, Emmet McKillion 0-2, Aaron Devlin 0-2, Fergal Duffin 0-1, Niall Doyle 0-1.
St Macartan’s : Daniel McKenna 1-5, Daniel McNally 0-2, Gareth McQuaid 0-1.
