Ulster Colleges’ Corn na nÓg quarter-finals
St Patrick’s Cavan 2-15 St Mary's Magherafelt 2-5
Omagh CBS 2-13 St Colman’s Newry 1-6
St Patrick’s Maghera 4-6 St Patrick’s Armagh 1-4
There weren’t any shocks in the three BT Corn na nÓg quarter-finals at the weekend with a clear-cut win for the favoured team in each game.
St Patrick’s Cavan had shocked Maghera in the league sections and they kept up their unbeaten run with a 10 points win over St Mary’s Magherafelt.
The breakthrough score was a goal just before the break, a long punt in from Paul Leddy that went all the way to the net and opened up an interval lead of 1-8 to 1-4.
Although Magherafelt goaled on the re-start through Manus McAllister, Cavan pulled clear with fine points from Leddy and Conor Smyth who also grabbed a late goal.
Maghera also won easily, taking control from the start of their game in Castledawson against St Patrick’s Armagh with goals from Michael Mullan and Paddy Quigg.
Quigg scored a second half goal as well as Maghera qualified for a semi-final with Omagh CBS, 4-6 to 1-4.
Omagh were comfortable 2-13 to 1-6 winners over St Colman’s, leading 0-9 to 1-1 at the break, the Colman’s goal coming from Ronan McEvoy.
However second half goals from Brendan McGrath and Aidan Fullerton clinched the game well before the final whistle.
The last quarter-final between Abbey CBS and St Patrick’s Academy was postponed until this morning (10.30am in Sherry’s Field Armagh).
St Mary’s actually led 0-5 to 0-1 at half time, but St Louis hit back with an early goal from Colm Griffin and clinched the semi-final spot with a late strike from Ciaran Dobbin.
In the Ennis Cup quarter-finals, a late penalty from Conor Gillan clinched a remarkable 6-8 to 7-4 victory for Loreto Coleraine over Lismore Comprehensive.
Thomas Magee won the penalty, having already contributed 3 goals, but spare a thought for Lismore full-forward Aaron Mallon who scored 6 goals and a point and still finished on the losing team!
