BT MacLarnon Cup quarter-final

St Columb’s Derry 2-6 St Patrick’s Cavan 1-7

A converted penalty in the 50th minute by Mark Brennan helped St Columb’s Derry lay down a BT MacLarnon Cup marker at MUSA yesterday.

Although they led St Patrick’s Cavan by 0-4 to 0-2 at half-time in the first of the quarter-final ties, their chances of staying in the competition looked shaky.

They had camped out for long periods in the Cavan half during the wind-assisted opening half-hour, but were wasteful enough in their shooting.

Within 90 seconds of the re-start, Cavan turned a 2 points deficit into a 2 points lead with a well-taken goal from Cian Vaughan and a quick follow-up point from Conor McGearty.

St Columb’s however dug in and Michael Brennan and Michael Sweeney re-established a grip on midfield.

Mark Brennan, Michael’s cousin, put the city side ahead with a 41st minute strike and his penalty 9 minutes later gave them control.

Close to the end, Cavan’s best player on the day, Pauric Sexton edged them closer with two points but St Columb’s held on to make the semi-final draw.

The other three quarter-final games are scheduled for the end of next week.

Meanwhile the remaining Corn na nÓg quarter-final between St Patrick’s Academy and Abbey CBS, postponed on Monday, goes ahead today, 2pm in Sherry’s Field Armagh, with the winner out once more for the weekend’s semi-finals.

St Columb’s : Mark Brennan 2-0, Ryan Moore 0-2, Caolan Watson 0-2, Ryan McCloskey 0-1, James McClay 0-1.

St Patrick’s Cavan : Cian Vaughan 1-0, Pauric Sexton 0-3, Sean o’Kane 0-1, Ben Kernan 0-1, Conor McGearty 0-1, Conal McGinley 0-1.
