Lumen favourites to beat newcomers

Fri 9th Dec 2011

BT Faul Cup final

Monday, 5.15pm in Ballycastle :

St Killian’s Garron Tower v Lumen Christi Derry.

Lumen Christi qualified for this final three weeks ago with a 3-7 to 1-4 victory over Glen Road CBS, a week after knocking out the holders Aquinas 5-9 to 1-8.

Their attack has been in a rich goal-scoring vein throughout the competition with Leo Casey, Jamie Devine, Jack Dixon and Ronan Reilly fine finishers – Reilly in particular finding the net at least once in every game.

Their defence is quite good as well with Conal McGlinchy, Michael McLaughlin and Ciaran Flanagan all good leaders.

The younger members of the squad are playing in their third Colleges’ final in a row after collecting the BT Ennis and Mallon Cups.

Lumen however are up against an unknown quantity in St Killian’s who don’t normally participate in football.

What makes their run through to the final all the more remarkable is that around half the team play with Glenravel in the Antrim leagues while the rest are not involved with any club at all.

Last Friday they defeated Lismore Comprehensive by 3-5 to 1-5, ruthlessly punishing errors at the back with goals from Christy McNaughton, Ryan McIlroy and Stephen Hamill.

Christy, brother of county senior hurler Shane, is a convert to football as are his Ruairi Og clubmates Paddy Burke, Stephen Walsh and Coilin Hayden, while Glenarm’s Hugh Pat McNeill played a big part alongside McNaughton and Sean McCann on the BT Gallagher Cup winning side last May.

Lumen have the tradition, and the scoring form this season, and are rightly installed as favourites – but can the Tower complete their unexpected run from nowhere by lifting the Cup?
