Junior Shield final : St Benedict’s Randalstown v Loreto Cavan
Today’s Junior Shield final in Colleges’ camogie brings a novel pairing to Sherry’s Field in Armagh (11.30am).
Cavan’s Loreto College have been in a number of Ulster finals in the past and won their share – but it is quite some time since they last collected silverware.
St Benedict’s Randalstown are in their first ever final, after a very late goal gave them a 2 points victory over another team from Cavan, Bailiboro College last Friday.
The south Antrim side never gave up in that game and their defence, marshalled by Jade Devlin and Gabrielle McCann, held out under a lot of pressure until Laura McCann took a pass from her midfield partner and sister Lucia to slot home in the second minute of injury time.
Loreto qualified a week earlier with a comfortable 4-2 to 0-0 victory over Colaiste Feirste, a game that they dominated for large parts.
8 of the starting line-out are from the Laragh club, including the O’Rourke sisters at midfield, Aideen Coyle at full-back and goal-getter Eimear Sexton.
Emma Duffy at central defence and Edel McDermott at centre-forward are Redhills players.
Camogie has been revitalised at schools’ level in Cavan this season, and it would boost it further if Loreto were to contest an All-Ireland semi-final. They are slight favourites to make it through.
